Best starting point

For the 2024 LG G4, begin with Filmmaker Mode or Cinema for SDR/HDR10, Cinema for Dolby Vision, and Game Optimizer for games. Configure every dynamic range independently and avoid copied white-balance or color-tuner values.

The G4 is a Gallery-series model with different measured performance from earlier generations, but measurements are not menu settings. Panel size, sample, firmware, room and test method still matter.

SDR movies and daily viewing

Use Filmmaker Mode or Cinema and set OLED Pixel Brightness for the environment. Maximum output is rarely necessary for sustained SDR viewing in a controlled room. Keep white balance at default without a meter.

For sports, first confirm the stream quality and frame rate. Add motion interpolation only if you prefer it. OLED Motion Pro/BFI can trade brightness and flicker for clearer motion and may be unavailable with some high-refresh or VRR signals.

HDR10

Start with Filmmaker Mode or Cinema. Compare Dynamic Tone Mapping Off and On with familiar HDR10 scenes. DTM On can change midtones and highlight presentation to improve apparent visibility; Off is the less adaptive choice. Neither label replaces a panel calibration.

Dolby Vision

Use Cinema for a dark or controlled room. Cinema Home is a brighter alternative for ambient light. Dolby Vision follows a separate path from HDR10, so do not assume an HDR10 DTM choice or HGiG setup controls it.

PS5 and Xbox

Use Game Optimizer and confirm capabilities in the console. A game must provide a 120 fps mode before a 120 Hz output produces additional native frames. VRR and ALLM are separate features and should be enabled only where supported.

For HGiG HDR10, select HGiG on the TV before running the console calibration. Configure in-game HDR after that. If you choose DTM for a brighter presentation, make the choice knowingly rather than stacking it on an unexplained calibration.

144 Hz PC workflow

Supported G4 PC configurations can expose refresh rates above console 120 Hz operation. Treat 144 Hz as dependent on the GPU, driver, HDMI output, cable, selected input type, resolution, VRR/HDR state and firmware. Verify it in Windows Advanced Display or the GPU control panel.

If the image drops out, return to a known-good lower refresh rate and test one link at a time. A cable marked “8K” is not proof of the actual negotiated signal. On macOS, use only modes the Mac and connection expose.

Panel care and software scope

Use moderate SDR brightness and display sleep for static PC work. Preserve LG's documented OLED Care controls during normal use. Gallery-series placement must also follow LG's installation and ventilation instructions.

OLED Control can operate supported TV settings and inputs. It cannot force GPU bandwidth, create a 144 Hz mode, calibrate the panel or guarantee a control hidden by firmware.

G4 brightness without magic values

The G4's Gallery hardware and processing support high HDR output, but published peaks depend on size, mode, window and firmware. Set SDR Filmmaker/Cinema for the room; do not run maximum sustained output merely because the panel can produce strong HDR highlights.

For HDR10, compare DTM On/Off at one timestamp. Dolby Vision Cinema/Cinema Home remain separate. Greater panel capability changes mapping headroom, not the need to configure each signal.

G4 144 Hz size caveat

LG's specification lists up-to-144-Hz VRR for supported 55–83-inch G4 models, while the 97-inch configuration is limited differently (120 Hz). Verify exact regional specification. A family name is not enough.

PC 144 Hz needs compatible GPU, driver, certified direct cable and enabled TV mode. Consoles remain 120 Hz-class. Establish 4K120 first, then add 144 Hz, HDR and VRR one by one.

G4 game calibration

Use Game Optimizer. Select HGiG before source calibration; DTM is a separate brighter preference. Cap below the refresh ceiling and prioritize stable frame time. A high average with spikes can create visible VRR flicker.

Full blackouts are HDMI/link problems. Near-black pumping under VRR is a timing/gamma trade-off. Fine Tune Dark Areas changes shadows but cannot repair either link errors or game-engine stalls.

Test eARC and high-bandwidth cables before permanent wall routing. Keep ventilation clear. For audio dropouts, test TV speakers, PCM, bitstream and CEC devices individually.

Keep Screen Move, Logo Brightness and automatic compensation. High-end output does not remove static-content aging. Manual Pixel Cleaning is not scheduled after every session.

G4 FAQ

Does the 97-inch G4 support the same 144 Hz mode?

No. Size-specific official specifications must be checked; the 97-inch limit differs.

Should G3 settings be copied?

No. Use mode principles, not white balance or fixed brightness values.

Is 144 Hz required for good PC gaming?

No. Stable 120 Hz can be preferable when the chain or game cannot sustain 144.

Can OLED Control unlock unsupported refresh?

No. It cannot change panel, HDMI or GPU hardware.

G4 verification checklist

Confirm SDR, HDR10, Dolby Vision, console 120 Hz and PC 144 Hz as separate paths. Test eARC after wake and inspect VRR with a stable dark checkpoint. Record exact size and firmware because the 97-inch refresh limit and other size-dependent behavior prevent one family-wide configuration claim.
