Black-Crush Symptoms

Black crush has a specific visual signature:

  • Different dark fabrics become one solid shape even though highlights and midtones look normal.
  • Hair loses texture on the shadowed side of a face.
  • A game's calibration symbol remains invisible across most of the slider range.
  • Near-black test patches that should be distinct disappear together.
  • The problem occurs only on one HDMI device, while the same streamed title looks normal in a webOS app.
  • Raising the TV black-level control reveals detail but also makes true black and letterbox bars visibly gray.

Do not confuse this with artistic grading. Some films deliberately place large regions at or below visible black. Streaming compression can also erase subtle texture before the television receives it. Finally, room reflections can cover near-black detail even when the electrical levels are correct.

Causes Ordered by Probability

1. Full/limited RGB mismatch

Digital video uses defined code ranges. A PC often outputs RGB Full, while video devices may use a limited range. The TV must interpret the same convention. If a limited signal is treated as full, shadow information is compressed toward black; if full is treated as limited, black can be clipped or remapped incorrectly. Labels such as Low, High, Limited, Full and Auto vary by firmware, so match the behavior rather than copying one menu word.

2. Wrong picture context

The C1 and C2 save controls separately for SDR, HDR10 and Dolby Vision, often per input. Testing SDR settings while the failure occurs in Dolby Vision proves little. Game Optimizer also has its own black stabilizer and genre controls that can alter shadows independently.

3. Source or title

A poorly encoded stream, an incorrect PC video-player conversion, a console capture setting or a title's mastering may contain no recoverable detail. If the artifact appears in a screenshot or on another calibrated display at the same frame, the TV cannot recreate what is absent.

4. Near-black panel behavior

WOLED panels have difficult transitions immediately above black. Panel variation, compensation state and processing can affect very dark uniformity. This is evaluated only after range and source are correct; it is not fixed by importing another owner's white-balance values.

Step-by-Step Shadow-Detail Fix

1. Choose the right pattern

Use a recognized black clipping pattern suitable for SDR video, or the platform's own HDR setup for HDR gaming. Play it through the exact device and app that looks wrong. A browser image is unreliable because browser color management, video range and HDR conversion may change its values.

Darken the room enough that reflections do not hide the first patches. Sit at the normal viewing position and allow your eyes a few minutes to adapt.

2. Reset the affected profile

Reset only the active picture mode. Start with Cinema, Filmmaker Mode or the appropriate Game Optimizer profile. Leave white balance and color management at default. Disable dynamic contrast and other shadow-changing enhancements during diagnosis, recording their previous states.

3. Match source and display range

Prefer Auto at both ends when the HDMI negotiation is reliable. If testing manually, set both source and television to a known matching pair. On an NVIDIA PC, inspect Output dynamic range in the graphics control panel. Consoles also provide RGB range choices, but Auto is usually the safer baseline.

Replay the clipping pattern after every change. The goal is not to maximize the number of visible bars. Reference black must remain black; only intended above-black steps should separate.

4. Compare internal and external playback

Play the same title and timestamp in a native LG app and on the external box. If only HDMI is crushed, keep investigating source range, player output or receiver conversion. If both are identical, compare a second title or trusted disc before changing the panel's baseline.

An AV receiver may report or transform video differently. Connect the player directly to the TV for one controlled comparison. Return the receiver only after the direct path is understood.

5. Treat HDR10 and Dolby Vision independently

HDR10 has its own tone mapping. Dynamic Tone Mapping can change shadow visibility along with highlights; compare On and Off at one scene, but do not use it to conceal an RGB mismatch. HGiG is for a source-calibrated HDR game path and should be selected before console calibration.

Dolby Vision uses separate Cinema/Cinema Home profiles and metadata-driven rendering. A black-level problem limited to one external Dolby Vision player should be compared with the internal app. Do not transplant the SDR black control into Dolby Vision.

6. Check the room and screen, not only menus

Light striking the panel raises the viewer's perceived black floor and masks subtle steps. Move a lamp, close a curtain or change the viewing angle before adding electronic lift. Clean the screen only according to LG's instructions; smears can scatter light in dark scenes.

C1/C2 and Game-Specific Details

On C1 and G1, the 2021 Game Optimizer introduced Black Stabilizer and Fine Tune Dark Areas in supported VRR workflows. On C2/G2, the layout and firmware behavior differ. Fine Tune Dark Areas is intended to compensate visible near-black shifts under VRR; large negative or positive values can crush or raise ordinary shadows. Return it to neutral while diagnosing a non-VRR movie.

The C2's 42- and 48-inch versions are often viewed much closer. Close viewing makes compression blocks, panel uniformity and small gamma differences easier to see. That does not justify different digital range rules.

Picture settings can also be copied across inputs by LG's “Apply to all inputs” behavior, but signal contexts remain separate. Document the source and active badge so an HDR result is not mistaken for SDR.

When Not to Adjust Black Level

Stop when letterbox bars and an OLED-black menu background begin to glow. Do not compensate for a bright room by lifting the electrical black floor; control ambient light or select a suitable picture presentation instead.

Avoid service-menu changes, copied two-point white balance and repeated manual pixel cleaning. None establishes correct source code values. A manual compensation cycle is not a black-crush calibration tool and unnecessary repetition adds wear.

Seek support when a large fixed region remains black or tinted across internal menus and independent sources, or when near-black patterns reveal severe fixed lines after normal use and automatic maintenance. Bring photographs made with fixed camera exposure and normal-content examples, not only exaggerated test slides.

FAQ

Should RGB range be Full or Limited?

Either can reproduce correct video when both ends agree. Auto is generally best for consoles and players; PC desktop workflows commonly use Full. Consistency matters more than the label.

Why does raising Brightness reveal everything?

It moves digital black upward, including values intended to remain black. The extra visibility may be false lift rather than recovered grading.

Can Dynamic Tone Mapping fix crushed blacks?

It may change visibility in HDR10, but it is not a repair for a range mismatch or missing source data. Establish the signal first.

Is slight near-black nonuniformity burn-in?

Not automatically. Temporary panel uniformity, viewing conditions and very dark compression can look similar. Persistent content-shaped retention requires a separate assessment.
