Causes: Three Different Dimming Systems

Automatic Brightness Limiting

ABL is a power/thermal behavior tied to how much of the screen is bright. A large white browser window can dim quickly; a small HDR highlight can remain intense. It does not normally wait several minutes for a dark scene. Confusing ABL and static-scene dimming leads to irrelevant fixes.

Energy and ambient-light controls

Energy Saving, AI Brightness and related settings can adapt output to room conditions or content. They are user-facing and safe to test. Their menu names vary with webOS version and region. Record the original state before disabling them for a controlled comparison.

Source-side tone mapping, subtitle luminance and app updates can also change apparent darkness. Dolby Vision Cinema and Cinema Home are different presentations; comparing them does not isolate panel protection unless every other variable is held.

Step-by-Step Dimming Diagnosis

1. Choose one known sequence

Select a scene lasting several minutes with little camera movement, then note the starting timestamp and exact app/device. Start playback from before the scene so the protection timer begins consistently. Do not use a paused test slide; that intentionally resembles static content and proves little about normal viewing.

2. Lock the viewing conditions

Close curtains or keep room lighting constant. Disable Energy Saving and AI Brightness only for the test, recording their prior settings. Use the same picture mode and OLED Pixel Brightness. If the change disappears, re-enable one automatic control at a time to identify it.

3. Trigger a non-destructive overlay

When the image appears dim, briefly call up the player's information/progress overlay and dismiss it. Do not adjust picture settings. A rapid recovery caused by added screen movement supports static-scene detection. If the scene remains dim, the grade or source may simply be dark.

4. Replay and time it

Return to the starting point and repeat. A similar delay strengthens the protection hypothesis. Random changes at different frames point more toward app adaptation, network quality or dynamic tone mapping. Record firmware and app versions because owner reports can cluster around updates without proving causation.

5. Compare internal and HDMI playback

Play the same master in an LG app and external streamer where possible. If only the external path changes, verify SDR/HDR/Dolby Vision output, range and player settings. Some boxes force Dolby Vision or HDR for all content, producing a different baseline. Connect directly to the TV to remove a receiver.

6. Test subtitles carefully

Bright subtitles can change average picture level and algorithm perception. Compare the same language track with subtitles off, but do not conclude that subtitles “fix” the panel. If subtitle brightness itself is distracting, adjust it in the app when supported rather than altering global black level.

7. Update through supported channels

C1/G1 Specific Context

C1 and G1 are 2021 webOS 6 models. The G1's OLED evo positioning and Gallery design can produce different measured brightness from C1, but both use OLED protection. Extra output does not make the G1 immune to uneven wear.

Settings are stored separately for SDR, HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Dolby Vision Cinema Home may look brighter than Cinema due to its presentation choices. Dynamic Tone Mapping applies to HDR10, not ordinary Dolby Vision playback. Diagnose the fade inside one unchanged signal path.

The menu layout may move after updates. Follow on-screen descriptions and LG support documentation rather than a service-remote video. Consumer menus intentionally do not expose every internal protection parameter.

Safe Fixes and Workarounds

For a false-positive scene, a brief playback overlay or normal content transition can restore output without changing protection. An external player/app that handles the same title differently may avoid the trigger. Keeping current firmware and supported energy settings provides the lowest-risk path.

Choose Cinema Home only when its brighter Dolby Vision presentation suits the room, not as a universal anti-dimming hack. Improve room light control so dark grading remains visible at a reasonable sustained output. For desktop/static use, employ screen sleep and varied content instead of defeating protection.

If the dimming occurs constantly in normal moving content, across internal apps and independent sources, provide LG with timestamps, video, firmware and model suffix. A reproducible consumer-use false positive is more actionable than a generic complaint.

When Not to Change Settings

Do not enter IN-START/EZ-Adjust or toggle TPC/GSR. Service menus vary by model, firmware and region; incorrect changes can affect operation. They are not picture calibration controls.

Do not raise black level to compensate. That makes true black gray and alters every dark scene. Do not run manual Pixel Cleaning: compensation addresses panel uniformity/retention, not an active luminance-control decision.

Leave ABL-related behavior alone when only large bright windows change output. That is a normal power characteristic. Conversely, do not call every intentionally dark grade a protection fault; verify recovery and timing.

No. ASBL is community language for static-scene dimming; ABL reacts to bright image area and power demand. Their timelines and triggers differ.
