LG OLED FAQ: Dimming, HDR, Gaming, PC Setup and Burn-in

Why does my LG OLED get dimmer?

First identify the pattern. A large bright image can invoke ABL power/thermal limiting. A paused or nearly unchanged image can invoke static-scene dimming. Logos and static regions can involve other protection controls. Energy Saving and the source device can also change brightness.

Compare moving content, a paused scene and a large white window before changing settings. Keep documented OLED protections enabled for normal use.

Can I disable TPC or GSR?

Some LG generations expose service-menu entries with those names; others rename, lock or omit them. They are not ordinary calibration controls, and disabling protection can increase uneven-wear or burn-in risk. Start with the protection-features guide.

Does code 0413 always open the service menu?

No. Community guides often mention 0413 after an IN-START or EZ-ADJUST command, but remote commands, codes and menu layouts vary by model, region and firmware. There is no supported universal sequence. Read Service Menu Access before considering a factory interface.

What picture mode should I use?

Start with Filmmaker Mode or Cinema for SDR and HDR10 films, Cinema for Dolby Vision, and Game Optimizer for games. Configure each format while it is active. Set SDR brightness for the room and avoid copying white-balance or color-tuner values from another panel.

HGiG or Dynamic Tone Mapping for games?

Use HGiG when you want a source-led HDR10 calibration: select HGiG on the TV, run the console/Windows calibration, then configure the game. Dynamic Tone Mapping is a different, often brighter preference. HGiG is not a video format and not every game follows its guidance. See HGiG explained.

Are HDR10 and Dolby Vision settings interchangeable?

No. They use different signal and processing paths. Configure Dolby Vision while Dolby Vision content is playing. Do not copy an HDR10 Dynamic Tone Mapping or HGiG choice into a Dolby Vision movie mode.

Do ALLM, VRR and 120 Hz mean the same thing?

No. ALLM requests low latency, VRR varies refresh timing, and 120 Hz is a refresh mode. The source, television, port, cable and game must support the selected combination. A 120 Hz TV cannot turn a game rendering 30 or 60 frames per second into native 120 fps.

Can an LG OLED be used as a PC monitor?

Yes, with static-content care. Use the PC input type where desktop chroma clarity matters, verify resolution/refresh/HDR at the computer, and match source/display video range. Use moderate SDR brightness, auto-hide persistent UI where practical and enable display sleep. Follow the PC monitor setup guide.

Should I force RGB Full?

Only when the complete chain is configured consistently. A Full/Limited mismatch can raise blacks or crush shadow detail. “Full” is not automatically better if the TV interprets the signal differently. Auto can work correctly when the handshake is reliable.

Do I need 10-bit output for desktop use?

Not for ordinary text. Higher bit depth can help smooth gradients in a compatible workflow, but it cannot repair banding encoded into a compressed image. Actual support depends on the computer, GPU, adapter, cable, refresh rate and display mode.

Does BetterDisplay fix Mac banding?

BetterDisplay can manage supported macOS display and scaling modes. It cannot restore missing source information or guarantee a 10-bit/dithering control on every Mac. Use the Mac banding diagnosis guide.

How do I reduce burn-in risk?

Use varied content, reasonable sustained brightness, display sleep for static work and LG's documented Screen Move/logo-protection features. Avoid leaving paused games, news banners or bright desktop interfaces indefinitely. Follow LG's guidance for pixel cleaning rather than running manual compensation repeatedly.

What can OLED Control change?

OLED Control can operate supported television state and settings after pairing. Feature availability depends on the app version, TV model and firmware. It does not calibrate the panel, configure a console/GPU, rewrite TV firmware or remove the risks of service-menu changes.

Why does 4K 120 Hz sometimes show No Signal?

High-bandwidth HDMI exposes problems that 4K60 does not. Connect the console or PC directly, enable the LG input's enhanced/Deep Color mode, use a certified Ultra High Speed cable, establish 4K60 first, and add 120 Hz, HDR and VRR separately. A receiver that passes 4K60 HDR may still block 4K120 or VRR.

A short black interval while switching refresh rate or HDR can be normal resynchronization. A permanent No Signal screen, repeated reconnects or colored sparkles needs HDMI diagnosis. See Connection Issues; picture calibration controls cannot repair a missing digital link.

Why do dark movies stutter on OLED?

OLED's fast response exposes the 41.7-millisecond hold of each 24 fps film frame. Evenly stepped pans can therefore look less smooth than on a slower LCD. Real Cinema addresses film cadence, while TruMotion generates intermediate frames. A low interpolation choice is a preference; stronger levels can create soap-opera motion and artifacts. Random hitches or audio breaks point to streaming or playback rather than normal 24p stutter.

Why does VRR flicker in dark games?

Variable refresh changes the interval between frames. Near-black OLED output can shift visibly when frame time is unstable, particularly in menus, loading screens or around low-frame-rate-compensation transitions. Compare the same checkpoint with VRR off, cap below the refresh ceiling and improve frame-time stability. Fine Tune Dark Areas can shift shadow visibility but cannot repair rendering cadence.

Full blackouts and HDMI reconnects are a separate fault. Do not crush black level merely to hide VRR luminance fluctuation.

When should I contact LG?

Use support when a fault remains in internal menus, survives independent direct sources, affects a fixed portion of the panel, repeatedly power-cycles the TV, or includes lines and blocks. Provide model suffix, firmware, photographs and exact reproduction steps. A single compressed stream, game bug or receiver handshake is usually better handled at that source.
